  10.  AB    OBJECTIVE: To engage members of the general population in creating and
  11.        implementing AIDS prevention campaigns with the technical support of the
  12.        Sao Paulo State Secretory of Public Health. METHODS: Our strategy
  13.        consists in periodically setting up booths in areas of high foot traffic
  14.        to enroll individuals in the program. The registered individuals
  15.        participate in the following activities: 1) Kick-Off Meeting--an
  16.        introductory meeting to introduce the program; 2) Three-Day Workshop--We
  17.        divide the participants into small groups (7 to 10 people), each led by
  18.        one of our facilitators, to discuss the following agenda: 1st
  19.        day--General information about HIV infection; 2nd day--HIV transmission
  20.        and prevention techniques; 3rd day--Hands-on planning of educational
  21.        strategies of AIDS prevention to target population; 3) Follow-Up
  22.        Meetings--The staff sets up weekly appointments to provide technical
  23.        support to the activities planned by the participants. We have prepared
  24.        a set of instructions defining standards and procedures for a wide range
  25.        of educational activities. RESULTS: Since December 1st, 1992, we have
  26.        organized three workshops, and 17% of the 106 enrolled participants have
  27.        been involved in the follow-up activities. So far, participants have
  28.        organized neighborhood association meetings, peers' discussions and
  29.        talks, group discussions with teachers and students, motivational games,
  30.        general audience talks, scientific meetings and a hot-line service in a
  31.        home telephone. CONCLUSIONS: The need for community involvement in AIDS
  32.        prevention is widely recognized. We believe that the Life is Priceless
  33.        Program has been effective in attaining this objective as it provides an
  34.        institutional setting in which the members of the community can discuss
  35.        their concerns, obtain adequate information and technical support which
  36.        carry over into their own activities for AIDS prevention.
